What to expect at your cleaning visit.
Most teeth cleanings are performed by a dental hygienist. Before they begin the cleaning the hygienist will ask you about your concerns with your teeth and will check the health of your gums. They will also update any needed x rays and work with the dentist to determine what type of cleaning is needed. If you have not had a cleaning in awhile, a deep cleaning or scaling procedure may be needed to remove the plaque and tarter from your teeth.
The dental hygienist uses a water spray and specialized instruments to get rid of plaque and tartar around your gum line, as well as in between your teeth. The hygienist will then polish and floss your teeth to help remove any remaining staining and plaque.
Finally the dentist will come in to check for cavities and look at the health of your teeth. Cleanings are scheduled for 2, 3, or 4 times a year depending on the health of your gums.
